Ed Stetzer–Dealing with this "Mormon Moment": Cults, Truth, and Grace

Mormonism is something we cannot escape right now. We are in a “Mormon Moment,” thanks to the candidacy of Governor Mitt Romney. Christians need to address this moment with truth and grace.

Right now, many are discussing what to call members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Is it a denomination, a cult, or another religion? How should we discuss such things in the moment?

  1. John A. says:

According the Cambridge Dictionary a cult is “a religious group, often living together, whose beliefs are considered extreme or strange by many people.” By this definition I would not consider Mormonism to be a cult.

If we have to put a label on it, I would say Mormons are heretics just like many so called mainline Christians who do not believe that Jesus rose from the dead and other traditional Christian beliefs. For many people, it seems, it is more important how a group makes you feel than what a group believes.
